Radio is an extraordinary medium. It travels through time and space between centuries and continents. A radio play takes place in the confines of somebody’s mind. The audience has to be attracted, and its attention held by the means of sound alone. ACS sixth graders have written creative/expressive radio plays, but in addition to speech, they have used sound effects, music, and something rarely appreciated by the inexperienced writer, silence. This variety is essential for holding the listeners’ attention and engaging their interest. Using Garage Band, they have recorded, edited and added sound effects. The students tried to convey a variety of things: suspense, anxiety and tranquility. Please take a few moments and enjoy the wonderful imaginations of our sixth graders.
